Red

In this collage, a dominant red rectangle functions as a foil to the surrounding green field. Keenly attuned to color interaction and spatial balance, the work reflects Eric’s early training as an art student in Stuttgart, where he was introduced to Bauhaus-derived principles of design. Under the instruction of Ernst Schneidler, Eric learned to divide space as a compositional exercise—an approach closely associated with Josef Albers. Eric later reflected: “What I do today is not that distant from what we carried out in [Herr Schneidler’s] class.”

Eric applied additional acrylic paint over his collaged tissue: cadmium orange dots descend below the red form, and vertical strokes of blue and green create depth to the left. These improvisatory marks introduce a dynamic, almost musical rhythm, recalling the jazz and classical music always playing while he worked in his studio.
