Rooster

This work, from a series of small animal sculptures created by Eric in the early 2000s, developed from an initial stack of pencil doodles and progressed through maquettes made of chipboard. Reflecting on the series, Eric remarked: “Simplify, simplify, simplify. My aim with my work is to simplify and refine, be logical and harmonious…. I believe these sculptures are examples of my approach applied to its fullest extent.”

Each sculpture in this series juxtaposes an abstracted black silhouette with brightly colored metal dowels, the contrast between delicate line and heavy mass imparting a sense of play and whimsy. The linear quality and bold form recall Eric’s fondness for the works of Paul Klee, who frequently painted lines atop color fields, while the silhouette suggests an affinity with the cut-outs of Henri Matisse.
