The all-over composition of this untitled collage evokes the structure of a traditional landscape, with its implied layers of foreground, middle ground (fields, flowers, trees, mountains) and sky. Eric’s palette of painted tissue transforms these conventions: a saturated green foreground meets a dark sky of nearly the same tone, the two bisected by a brighter band of sky and what might be read as a field of yellow blossoms. Scattered red and orange dots animate the yellow, breaking the otherwise restrained palette.

This collage reflects Eric’s early engagement with Goethe’s color theory, as well as his interest in modernist artists and movements. The geometric planes bring to mind Cezanne’s late landscapes and resonate with the formal language of Cubism.
