This early drawing belongs to a series of studies of the same model, and bears the hallmarks of direct observation characteristic of working from life. In this quick sketch, Eric captures the twist of the torso with a few precise lines that suggest folds of fabric; while the foreshortened left hand, rendered slightly larger, conveys its position closer to the artist. The lower drawing reflects an attempt at correction: here Eric adjusts the proportions, enlarging the forehead and adding greater definition around the cheekbone.
